Black w/ Purple legs help
« on: 04/16/13 06:27 UTC »
Hi All,

I had a buddy ask if I can make a black brush hog with purple legs. I know you can inject purple, then cut it out (leaving the legs behind) and then inject black. But I'm hoping there is a different way to give it more of a blended look. Purple legs that gently blend into the black body. Core injection? If so, which goes first and do I need one color hotter then another? Any help is appreciated. I'm excited about this laminate and hope I can impress myself. Should be fun!

IMO, you are better off doing what you said.  Inject the purple and cut out the body, then inject the black.  A core shot will not give you consistent results.  Also you have no control over which color will fill in the different parts of the mold.  You can certainly try though.

Ok, thanks. Ill stick with that then and mess around with what I have left over. I was think a blending block and pushing in just a little purple first and then filling the rest with black. That's assuming the purple will run all the way back before it fills, which Im thinking it should. I may post pics if that works.

Well I will say that your first attempt at adding photos was an huge success, and by the looks of the photos your baits were an alarming success as well.  I think they look very good, nice work.  I'd fish any of them.

I'm impressed. I didn't think that would come out as nice as it did. I now have new ideas for my twin injector. Thanks for sharing.

I have that mold in 2 cavity and 4 cavity and you can shoot laminates in either with the twin injector. Matter of fact, BT told me all their molds will shoot lams.

But if I have this right, he shot the purple first ( to fill the tail ) then the front color. That's  different then a laminate.

Yup, that would be correct. It's about the only way I can figure he can get that blended effect he wants. If you shoot a little in tails and then immediately shoot the body color with hotter plastic it should blend a little.  But you can't mess around.  You gotta do it quick before it sets.

I don't have molds with legs but they do have tails. Something I never do is make the tails black, but I tried it this morning in a small fry 1.75" and kind of like it. Purple too! lol I do like that black tail though and think it works better than had I trimmed it after shooting the black and done the tail in purple. I think in this color combination the black tail makes the bait and I'm glad I tried it after looking at your pics with the black and purple.

I hand poured the belly color, added a plate and shot the black, pulled the plate and pushed in the top color and wallah!

I tried a couple different eye colors to see if one stood out more than the other and that red eye makes this bait look like a caped crusader with a bad hangover.

I'm going to add here that every color seen in the pic in my last post is a re-melt. I haven't any idea how many times that black has been chopped and heated. The purple in the pic is on like its 8th round of heat, the belly color maybe its 6th or 7th..

Which is why I save most scrap plastic, great to experiment with.
