I shoot a lot of Croakers, and I too used to have this same issue, also the feet would fill about halfway at times (only one foot)...It drove me bonkers! Just like everything else we do, though, practice, good detailed notes, and trial and error was the key.What I found is to lightly clamp from the hinge side, then the gate side, and clamp both very lightly....not light enough to flash but close. If you do this you can shoot a fairly wide temp array and I'm confident you should get perfect frogs every time.
