Floating Claws
« on: 05/13/13 19:01 UTC »
I received a call today from a buddy asking me if I can make craws with floating claws. My first thought was using micro balloons for the claws. Is there any other way to achieve floating claws?  Thanks in advance!

Chuck

I believe all of CCM's plastic floats unless you put HD in it.

Ditto re Lamar's comments.  I don't see why you couldn't pour the body using HDA and the claws without HDA.  if you try that, Chuck, let us know what happens.
Until next time.

I use micro ballons for claw tips and trick worm and drop shot tails. You need to add softener.

WILL THE MICRO BALL MELT IN THE HOT PLASTIC? IM JUST WONDERING...........I'VE NEVER TRIED THAT AND JUST DON'T WANT TO RUIN ANY PLASTIC.

The micro balloons (glass spheres) will not melt in the plastic ...but the are a SIGNIFICANT inhalation hazard. There are a number of threads on the Forum discussing them and some ways to work with them.

I don't think you need them. CCM plastic floats so those claws should stick up on their own. If you are just making them for you and a buddy...whip some air bubbles into the plastic before injecting the claws. We normally try to avoid those little bubbles...but this time they are working in your favor!

Another idea, caneycreek has some floating foam for making the frogs float. You could cut small pieces of this off and put them in the claws.

They don't melt but do burst. There was a thread somewhere maybe TU where they posted a percentage of material that burst during the whole process.

I use the MF micro balloons in all my craws that will be used for jig trailers. 1 tbs of balloons, mixed with 1 tbs of worm oil, per cup of plastic. They stand your jig up like a craw in a defensive position when you pause it. Durability suffers though, and they make your baits opaque. Similar to using salt.
They are an inhalation hazard. I wear a resperator when using them, and recommend anyone else using them do the same. It only cost me around $15.
They will pop and form a goo in the bottom of your pan if you overheat them. I heat my plastic to 350, then drop it to 320 or a little less and add the balloons. I keep it in that temp range while shooting my baits, and have no issues with the balloons popping. Same thing when I remelt. I prepare a small batch of virgin plastic. Get it back down to 320, stir in the balloon/oil mixture, and start adding remelt pieces. They're easy to use when cooking in pots. Could be tougher using a microwave. ---Tim.

Thanks guys!  I think I am going to stay away from those things.  I will try using the HD in the body of the craw and just reg CCM plastic for the claws.  Thanks again!

I was just looking on the Lure Craft website and they have "Super Floater Bubbles."  Are those the same as the microballoons from the other sites.  They seem to be a lot cheaper and they sell by volume and not weight.
