Lam plates
« on: 08/13/13 21:03 UTC »
Ever find yourself frustrated that a lam plate fits just the one side of a mold? Well, tonight the drill press got some use and I did a re-hash on my 3.75" Super Fry lam plate. I etched centers for the aligment buttons on the belly/tail half and the lam plate. Then I found the centers for the future holes using those marks for reference. I pilot drilled a shallow hole at each site and followed up with a 5/16 bit down to about 5/16" deep. Now that darned plate can be used on BOTH halves of the mold.

I usuaully like to hand pour bellies but there are some molds that have enough capacity that shooting a belly section would be sweet. The 3.75" Super Fry is one such mold. The problem was that the lam plate shot only the backs....I wanted bellies. This modification allows me to do both bellies and backs when desired.

When I do bellies I want the backs to be the same color as the tails so I snip the tail off right at the back of each belly pice and slip them back in the mold. The second color goes in like a snap.

I've been in the garage making up a mountain of bellies for a little project that should get underway in the morning.

Love tinkering with things and this time the reward is dandy.

Here's a picture of the finished plate laying along side the belly half of the mold so hole alignment can be visualized. Nothing has changed other than the two new holes and both the mold and plate can be used as intended perfectly.

Seems to me that Do-it should incorporate this mod to the laminate plates. I too like the bellies to be a lighter color and the rest the darker color. I was doing the aluminum foil trick and then remelting the backs...not nearly as efficient !

I'm bringing over some of my laminate plates for you to modify! (I don't get along with drill presses either!). :D

Another great idea that I can put to use.
In nature, most creatures have lighter bellies, so this mod makes a lot of sense!
