Shelf life of cooked plastic
« on: 08/27/13 16:56 UTC »
Does cooked plastic have a shelf life?  About ninety percent of the baits I've made this year have turned cloudy and have a horrible chemical smell.  The smell comes through the bags too, my locker in my boat smells awful.  Had to throw them all away.  The plastic is not undercooked, even my leftovers from clear dipping eyes that had yellowed turned milky and smells.  All my leftovers are this way.  There is no scent in any of it.  I have some old plastic from two years ago that is fine.(ugly color that I never used)  Anyone have any ideas?  No bashing going on, never had problems with this plastic before.  Wasn't going to post, but having to throw 600-700 baits away has me a little hot.   Joey

Joey,

In the last nine months we have had one other customer come forward with a similar problem with bagged baits being oily and or smelling.  He sent us the remainder of his unused plastic and we were then, and still now, unable to duplicate the issue in shop or find the source of this particular problem.

We can certainly ask some questions with the manufacturing chemist to find out if there is any certain thing or things that may cause this issue.  We're hoping that some of the more experienced bait manufacturers here may have some insight as well.  Any info is helpful and if you ever have issues with Do-It product I would encourage you to call Customer Service 319-984-6055 or reach out to me directly via PM or email.

Thank you,

Jerry

I've has some baits cloud on me. The biggest culprit has been Junebug of the MF variety. I think I had some real clear stuff cloud too but not so much. I haven't ever had any widespread problem, mainly a single batch so I call it a fluke shoot. I have taken some of those clouded baits and set them in our furnace/utility room with the dehumidifier running and some of them cleared up. I haven't had any rancid smells come from any of them.
