How much salt -
« on: 09/10/13 23:41 UTC »
ok - I've searched the forums and I've seen everything from 3tsp to 1tbsp to a 1:3 ratio to...

My wife wants me to make some salty plastic - similar to Yamamoto -

I have pickling salt - she went and got me a box just to remind me - found it setting on the bench when I got home from work.

Whats the basic amount to get me started?

I don't like a bunch of salt, I use 1 tbs to 8oz
I think most will say 2 tbs to 8oz

I never use salt anymore. Once I went to HD sinking additive I never went back. You end up with a much better product.

Can you use the HD in other plastic.  Like will the HD work with Lure Craft plastisol?

This is a loaded question but it has been shown that a ratio of 4:2:1 for example 8ozs of super soft plastic, 4ozs of fine salt and 1oz of softener gets you very close to the weight and soft action of a senko. It is personal preference and different plastic may react different with all of the new formulations on the market, this should get you close.

HD isn't an option at the moment - its not the sinking part she wants, its the salt.

I'm using CCM 'regular' at the moment.

As gone2long said most guys use 2 teaspoons of salt to 4 oz. of plastic. Make a small batch and see if she likes them. Might put some salt in the bag so she can see that also.

Right - but his 4:2:1 ratio included 'super soft' from the start and additional softner - I just wanted to be sure that applies to 'CCM regular' as well

Thanks to all -

ps - - I've added a salt (and pepper) shaker to her tackle box as well.

I use 1 oz salt (pickling) to 8 oz med soft plastic. No softener needed.

Sim remember that this is a baseline I'm quite sure you can reformulate with regular plastic I just posted up this recipe as it seems to be the quickest way to achieve the goal of matching a senko, so there is room for playing around and getting a good result.

thanks all -

so, last nite - I used 1tbs to 4oz of plastic - added before heating - it never suspended - I added another  tbs after heating (and pouring a couple of baits) and started to get some consistency in salt content in the bait - I then remelted everything (after chopping up the remaining plastic and puddle of salt from the bottom of the cup) - at that point I could tell a 'difference' in the consistency of the plastic.

I was using a dark color - the bait was a shade lighter, but still good color - did not seem noticably 'softer' (which is not the goal - the goal is salty goodness when the fish bites it).

So, some progress -

a) 2tbsp per 4oz of 'regular' CCM plastic - stirred in after heated.

Going to do this again tonite with a fresh batch and see if it is consistent.

If you are adding salt for taste, 1 tablespoon per 4 oz is plenty. I would add 1/2 tbsn softener.

2 heaping tbsn per 4 oz and 1 tbsn softener is the standard formula for a stick bait that is fished weightless. Baits will be weak and tear easily.

I add salt after plastic has been heated, and then heat more to get the temp back up to where you want it. Remember, stir stir stir.

Hi,

I have been trying the ratio of 2 tbsp of salt to 4fl oz of plastisol and found that a lot (majority) of the salt settles at the bottom of the pyrex cup. Is this normal or is there something I can do different? I am using normal table salt.

I do have the HDA but don't want to use it on the lighter watermelon colors.

Thanks.
