What glitter to add to powder paint?
« on: 10/03/13 20:25 UTC »
So my wife wants me to make a jig for a friend of hers. This will be a Christmas present for her that will include an invitation on a saltwater fishing trip for her and her boys on my boat next summer.
I guess she just loves glitter. My wife wants me to make her a jig in her two favorite colors orange and purple with glitter on it.
So my plan is to add some glitter to the jigs immediatley after powder painting them.
Maybe do a white or super glow white base coat them a darker back in the orange or purple with the powder paint airbrush. Then I want to add some glitter before a UV blast clearcoat. Probably airbrush one color then use a glitter of the other color.  My question is what kind of glitter should I be using that will withstand the heat of powder paint curing in my toaster oven?
I was thinking I would buy some cheaper glitter at the craft store rather than ordering some specifically for jigs as I only need to make one or two jigs.
Is there a specific type or brand I should look for?

I use the same glitters that go into the plastic. Since I am making small heads, I have found a glitter product that measures .004" for the paint.

Do-It sells a glitter used in paints that is as fine in grain as what I currently use. I have used this product in powder paints too but the supplier I had stopped selling it so I had to find another vendor...pre-Do-It of course.

The glitter I am referring to is on page 69 of the physical catalog along with the vinyl lure finish. I see nine colors listed. I have this glitter in fire opal for some custom work I do on ice fishing lures for a local bait shop and am really happy with the way the glitter handles.

I would just add the glitter to two ton epoxy and epoxy the head

TJ's tackle sells what you are looking for if you plan on curing the jig. They have fine metal glitter and they have a heat resistant polyester glitter that works well during application and curing. I use small one ounce containers and actually mix the color paint with the glitter, it works great but I know you do massive size saltwater stuff so I'm thinking maybe mix glitter in with epoxy or you can get the Protec glitter coat which is clear powder with the glitter already in it. That works really well to as long as you don't use it in a fluid bed.

I was hoping not to have to order anything special but that may be the way to go.
Due to the size of these jigs and the quality of powder paint I don't usually coat the entire jigs in D2T. I just use it to seal the 3D eyes in place.
I don't have to do it right away so I guess I can order some when I have to place another order for hooks etc.
So long as I have it done for Christmas my wife will be happy.

I don't buy any specialty glitter - mine comes from JoAnne's, AC Moores, Michaels and even WalMart.  I use fine and extra fine - mixed in with color and clear powder paint it comes out just fine.  You might have to dip a few to check first but that's the easy part.

Finally found the photo's

Here's the glitter - the first 2 come from AC Moore's an arts and crafts store.  Any time they get it in I've bought it as they're phasing it out according to the clerk there.

This is Tulip, creatix and sample packs - if you buy the sample packs buy at least 3 of each.

This is how they come out, this is just a few of them

Using the www.nicolecraft.com address at the bottom of the glitter bottles I was able to locate this place: http://factorydirectcraft.com/catalog/categories/1302_2533_2291-glitter.html
All sorts of glitters if a guy doesn't have one of the hobby minded shops handy.

Nice looking jigheads, Fatman. Great colors. I mix all of my glitters used for coating jigheads into transparent colors of powder paint, just enough to get decent coverage.

Question: Do you really think glitter makes a difference to the fish? I don't use it on jigs because I find it doesn't make a difference.

I think sometimes it will if the fish are studying the bait. I find that more people buy jigs that have the flash in them than without. I see glitter affecting whether fish hit or not being a cold water thing than warm water. Its my theory that fish in the real cold water are less active while those in warmer water are usually going to hit more deliberately. That's just my thinking and observations. I know from sales records that jigs with glitter and/or eyes sell better than those without.

The same argument holds true with eyes.

The Darice glitter is nice but I like the fine or extra fine.

For the little extra effort while powder painting I like glitter in my jigs, but I'll have plain colors also!!  X2 on the eyes issue.

I fish the saltwater a lot and I don't think that in 50+ ft of water glitter or eyes make much difference.
But it sure does to the fishermen buying the jigs.
I know one guy who really likes it when I put red around the gill area of the jigs. Do I think it matters to the Halibut at 150'? no I do not. But I know he is more likely to buy any jig that has it.

Does glitter matter?  Yes.  Glitter can replicate scale patterns, such as on this rainbow shiner's back.

By the way, if anyone has these fish where they live, I'd love to get some!
