Looking for some feedback
« on: 10/27/13 16:54 UTC »
I'm looking for some feedback on this nymph I tied after making some dubbing for it.

I ordered some tying materials today so by next week I should have some more pictures up of different flies I have planned.

That's a good tie, what size hook is that? It will catch fish.  Nice job!

Gary's right.  It will watch fish.  The fact that you made your own dubbing is impressive and leads me to speculate that you are on the verge of bankruptcy, divorce and possible cult worship.  Making your own dubbing usually doesn't start for a few years after you start tying flies.  It often leads to criminal activity.  I once appropriated (stole) a 6" patch of landscape fabric from a building site so I could make some neat dark wings for a dark stone fly imitation, have been known to frequent fabric stores hoping to score some discarded bridal veil material at the risk of being seen there by my friends.  I stole my wife's coffee grinder so I could make my own wool dubbing from yarn she was using to knit a sweater (LESSON LEARNED:  Always, always, always, cut the yarn from the end of the ball).  And, yes, you can make dubbing from belly button fuzz, and, yes, it will catch fish.  The list goes on.

I'm pretty sure Jerry, smalljaw, Fatman and others will attest that you're on dangerous ground, Josh.  I, for one, will pray for you because that's what I do.  You might want to get your affairs in order.  Feel free to give me a call because that's what I do too.
Until next time.

Denny

Listen to Denny. His cat didn't and it now has an ever-growing bald spot on its haunches near its...well....near the end.

I'm in accordance with Gary though and a very nice looking bug tie.

As all have mentioned...  It will certainly fish and it is a fine fly tie indeed.  If you don't believe that, then you can tie a dozen more and send them on to me... Mr. Jerry, c/o Do-It Corp. 50622.  I'll give them some rigorous testing and critique things for you as I see them from this end.

I will also concure with Denny... if you're making your own dubbing at this stage there likely isn't much help for you going forward.  You are bound to wind up like he and I using any "borrowed" pieces of fabric and fur to wrap on a hook just to see what it looks like or what it might catch.

There's worse things... nice work.

Fly tiers are on there own level of crazy! Just remembered every one laughed at that goofy painter that painted the starry night  but now he is considered a genius. He also cut his ear off and drank till he hallucinated. Y'all should be on the same level of crazy  :P great looking fly!!!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I wasn't sure if it was looking good or not since I don't use a lot of nymph flies and it's only my seventh fly I've ever tied. I think if I make another I'm going to make the wing casing on the back slightly larger and maybe make the tail a little thicker.

Hey Toadfrog, maybe you should get into some fly tying! All you'd need to get is a tying kit and you already have enough rabbit fur for a bit I'd guess. They aren't too expensive if you are just buying a kit it's when you go to websites and look at the materials is when it gets expensive. I'm frequently thinking to myself 'oh that'd be cool to have' or 'I need some of that for such and such' then it's pretty easy to spend a hundred bucks haha

All kidding aside JL, I have used flies that look almost identical to the one you show on the end of a dropper jig while ice fishing. I replace the hook on a plain lead 1/16 jigging spoon with about 4" of 4 pound fluorocarbon leader and tie the fly to the end. The fly has to be a sinking variety. This makes a super post-cold front rig when crappies are feeding in the middle of the water column but very tentatively. I think the flies I have are 16's or 14's and perfectly mimic some sort of aquatic flea or something I have watched crappies and sunfish feed on under the ice on camera over a broad area of mud bottom during daytime hours.

I like it!!!!!!! That is very buggy looking and I have to agree with Denny, you are on a slippery slope making your own dubbing. I don't fly fish but just tying jigs for bass got me into tying them for crappie and then trout and I've been doing some pan fish stuff and here is what I learned. I have cats, both short hairs and they get brushed once a week, a black cat and one that is orange and white, their hair makes great dubbing. Fabric stores, once you go there, will be like a crack house, you'll start sweating before you even get there and in order to keep the marrigage you'll have to leave the wallet and credit card at home and instead try to limit yourself to $20 cash. Craft stores are the same way, in fact they can be worse but grab the grinder and some various types and colors of yarn and you'll be amazed at what you can create and that is the slope you are on now. You are being pulled by the force, just like all tackle making, it can start as innocently as tying skirts on store bought jigheads or using mend-it or pro's soft bait glue and making your own creature baits from discarded plastics. That kind of activity gets you into thinking mode and then before you know it boxes of stuff begin to arrive, randomly at first but as the fever progresses the boxes begin to come more regularly and if you are married, this is about the time your wife has had enough because it isn't just the boxes, it is the fact that every box that comes leads to an extra hour and a half in the garage or basement or work shop and she just isn't having it, that slows the fever but it doesn't cure it. If you aren't married, well you'll be in trouble and you'll probably end up alone as no woman is going to come into your life and let it continue, if it happens before the fever gets too bad, well she may calm it down, but if she arrives too long after the fever has remained unchecked, well there isn't anything she or anyone else can do. The nymph looks super buggy as I said, and the tie itself is well done, keep up the great work, but remember the slope you are on, I hope you have cleats!!!!!

That's just fine for fishing!!  But brother if you're already trying the make your own dubbing either stop now or you'll definately hit the funny farm!!!!LOL  There are a few of us here, who are WAY PAST!!!!!!

Tying on a #8 you can get away with alot!  You start getting into 12's and below you'll find out real fast about proportions on your flies as you don't have all that space, and dubbing on smaller flies!! well you'll learn!!LOL

Even today when I tie flies I have my reference books out, unless I'm free tying and then it's all fun.

One VERY big tip when making your own dubbing - write down what you used and how much of each material!!!   There is nothing worse than coming up with a nice dubbing (well heck, the same can be said for powder paint mixing too!!) then running out and trying to figure out how you came up with it!!.

If you have questions ask away, that's why we're here.  AND!!!!! the most important thing!!!  If you get in trouble with the better half you can't blame us!!!!!!!!!!
