hard bait storage
« on: 11/20/13 21:31 UTC »
Well let's just  say I'm starting to get a rather large collection of crank baits  ;D I researched storage and well I can't decide what's the best route . I was wondering what y'all use? I would like to be able to store 50+ and keep them in the best condition possible ( I'm kinda partial to em ) I would like quick ID of styles and colors as well

Mo I use the Plano box that has two levels. It made for crankbaits. But you'll need two of them maybe three.  I put square bills on top. And med to deep divers on the bottom.

Bass Mafia Bait coffins :) They're SUPER DURABLE & dont let water in .as far as organize you should be able to fit 4-5 cranks of like colors in 1 slot depending on the size

That bait coffin looks like a great box. Are you able hang baits or do they lay flat like other box's. Mike 8)

The 3700 deep Bait Coffin is a great box, you can hang the baits vertically which is a great time save not having to shake a bait for 2-5 minutes trying to get it out.

The discontinued Shimano boxes are best for jerkbaits. They are getting hard to find and expensive though.

For fishing: I use plano 3700 series and try to fit as many baits per compartment without "bulging the lid".

For collecting - the Wille boxes with the springs seem to work nicely - they are just hard to find and bulky.

Shame on whoever showed the bait coffin - gonna cost me at least a hondo to test that out!  :o

Tommy, you've never seen the bait coffin?

They now have a more wallet-friendly version in multiple sizes as well as the two black and red ones.

x2 on what dreamer said. The inserts actually stay in the slots & wont fall out or warp on you so thats another good thing about them

Aside from the great selection of tackle and accessory items, if you click on the soft plastic menu you'll find a whole world of color patterns to challenge you. As you come to a color you like, click on it and it will get semi-enlarged so you can get a better look.

I've done a few things regarding hardbaits lately.  1st, I've done completely away with treble hooks...I've gone to singles.  2nd, and I'm waiting to see if this is going to bite me, is I've been using 3"x5" 4-mil bags to hold a few baits each, and pack these in their designated spot.  I've noticed through the years that the finish on loose hardbaits will decline as the bait rolls around, and rolls around on treble hooks.  Packed a few baits per bag, they don't roll around.  I also don't fight a Wad of Hardbait/Treble-Hook DemonDough.

This will, however, take some diligence on my part.  I have to make sure they're rinsed with clean water after the day's over, then completely dried and bagged, to try to avoid rusty hooks (I despise rusty hooks...they're also weakening as the rust progresses).
