color recipes for redfish
« on: 11/21/13 23:31 UTC »
I am looking for for some good color recipes for baits for redfish. Also what are the best Do-It baits to catch them? I have a customer in south Texas asking for some. Thank you.

Oh sweet mother now your talking...
Best mold well 3-4 inch carrots, smoking shad, and 3 inch glider would be my go to but mostly the carrots.
Color... A redfish will eat anything! But my  winter go to is light smoke/ large black flake with fine orange. Not much just enough to see it good.
Motor oil is good.
MOnkey milk is good.. I spell it like that because it my version of it 1.5 teaspoons violet hi lite, two match heads of pearl with medium black flake in 3/4 cups. It looks like a shrimp. Watermelon with a black back is a killer to. Oh the list could go on

Thanks Mo! I will give those a try. This is something new for me, making baits for redfish. It kind of caught me by surprise as I cater mostly to bass fishermen. It will be a nice change for me. One day I will have to give fishing for redfish a try. They tell me that they are a lot of fun, and are powerful fish. Thanks again for your help.

This all sounds like pretty sound advise... but what do I know??

What I do know is that I'll be having a shot at making some MOnkey milk of my own pretty darn soon.  That sounds like some wicked schtuff.   ;)

As has been mentioned...a Red will eat just about anything.  A Speckled Trout is WAY more wiley/picky than a Red any day.  Red's get spooky when they're in shallow, clean water, and that's where they're harder to catch.  As is the case with just about any Game Fish, use more natural colors in clear water.  But I'll throw these few up for grabs...some may already be posted somewhere on this forum, but...

Chartreuse/Red...my favorite Chartreuse, but with a little something extra, BKJ style...
12 oz.s Plastic
60 drops Chartreuse (non-X2)
1 Pinch Red Hilite Powder
1 Pinch .040" Red flake
1 Smidgen .015" Red flake

Smokey-G
14 oz.s Plastic
24 drops Black (non-X2)
50 drops Pearl Green Smoke (non-X2)
1 Smidgen .008" Gold flake

Avocado/Neon
12 oz.s Plastic
36 drops Green Pumpkin (non-X2)
1 Pinch .040" Red flake
1 Smidgen .015" Red flake

These 3 colors will cover most situations, the rest can be addressed with the different baits and presentations.  Remember, a Red will eat anything a Speckled Trout, Flounder, Bass (LM and SM), Walleye, Striped Bass or Bluefish will.

My #1 Do-It/CCM bait for Inland Salt is the 4" Skinny Carrot, aka the 4" Finesse Worm.  I fish alot different than alot of folks, though I'm not alone in some of my style.  I fish the 4" Skinny on a jighead, like any typical straight-tailed soft plastic.  I've got several baits that I throw in Inland Salt, but that's my #1 Do-It bait.  I'd GIVE AWAY A-L-L of my other Carrot molds (all have Lam Plates) if I had to and could only keep 1...I'd keep the 4" Skinny.

Back off of my 4" Skinny  >:(

4" carrot is a outstanding redfish bait if you know how to work it and know what a fish feels like because they do not always crush it. (Newbies will miss a lot of fish) If you have somebody who has not fished much tie on a 3 1/2" swim shad just have them reel it in slow and steady with the rod tip down. Hang on they seem to hit this bait harder they try to rip the rod out of your hands. I have caught nearly everything on a swim shad, reds, trout, flounder, drums. If I only picked one bait for myself it would be a carrot if I am picking just one for girlfriend it would be a swimshad.

My favorite color is Motoroil (changable) with gold flake with as bright a chartuse tail as I can get (X2).

Chartreuse red is a great panfish color, never thought of trying red hi lite in it though.  I will next time I make it.  MOnkey milk sounds sick.

mrex - "My favorite color is Motoroil (changable) with gold flake with as bright a chartuse tail as I can get (X2)".   This has been a confidence color for me for many, many years.  Works in both salt and fresh water.
