Messing With Their Head
« on: 11/29/13 19:27 UTC »
We sometimes mess with fishes' heads.  We try to feed them a Crazy Critter called a Creature.  We might throw a Black Buzzbait or Spinnerbait at night...HAHAHA.  We may even throw a Crawfish-patterned Crankbait...???  We flat-out mess with their heads, and it works.  On Bear's site, there's a Clear Frog...it REALLY got me thinking.  All these aspects went through my head, then the reality of small fish pecking at the spot on the water where my line breaks the surface followed those thoughts.

MOST of my Frog Fishing is in "mostly open" water, nowhere near any slop, but I try to associate most of the Frogs Track to some sort of cover, but this is definitely not always the case as I've fished Open Points (and other open areas) resulting in major Frog Strikes.  Why not, in Clear Water during the daylight hours, throw a Clear Frog?  Any other Clear bait would generally be the same, but it wouldn't produce the commotion (agitated disturbance), noise and wake that a Frog will.  I'm going to shoot up a batch of Clear Croakers ASAP, then marinate them so they'll be ready with the other colors, come about March.

At times clear Zara spooks and tiny tarpetoes are very good so I don't see why that wouldn't work

Clear tarpetoes have been out for years. This is something I used when I was a kid. Maybe 40 years or more ago. Bass fishing has always been about reaction strikes. If the bass knew what it was they wouldn't hit it. Oh wait a minute, that's fishing in general. But more true in bass or a preaditor type fish. They hide seek and attack. The more time you give them to think about it the less they will attack. The longer I fish bass the more I have caught that didn't know what they were hitting. It's all reaction and then it's to late.

I definitely agree, Fella's.  I've used Clear Hardbaits, Clear Floats, but I can't shoot those.  I've got 1 or 2 Clear ChugBugs that I break out sometimes, but that's rare.

When I'm catching fish on a bait I often wonder, is it the color, the profile, the action, the presentation, what is getting them to bite? If you had a clear version of that bait you could at least rule out color.

Then, of course, you have the clear baits with color patches on them. I'm talking about the "bare naked" series in reef runners; a very good walleye bait. Is it the flash of color or the clear patch that gets the fish?

I agree here, as well, and often wonder the exact same.  I'm probably going to cook a small batch in just a little while, once the sun warms the shop a little.  Maybe I'll do a little something different with the scraps from the batch, to add a little touch of color, or maybe a Loud Color out of the scraps...Blaze Orange/Chartreuse maybe?  Maybe color the scraps bright, and add that as a touch of color just where the Hook Point will be, and shoot another batch of Clear frogs with the bright "target patch"...hmmmm.

Edit: Or maybe I'm really getting too "technical" now.

I would try some colored feet on a clear body; but I favor two color baits.

Mr. Paul, I did think about the feet in a 2nd color, then I thought about the "target patch" nearer the hook point.  I've been heavily considering some 5mm (3/16") Black Spots for Eyes, as well.

MO and Lamar brought up good points about the Clear Hardbaits, but I think a Clear-based Frog is a bit different than those...maybe different enough to test Your gear, as the Hardbaits can tend to be a bit White, but a Clear Soft Plastic Frog may be closer to water-clear.  SHEESH...I'm goin' make a small batch.

And Roger on'nat, Mr. Tom.  I guess that's part of why we're here!  Little innovation without being technical...?

One of my deadly topwater river smallmouth baits is a clear Dying Flutter, I don't know how the fish even see it but they hammer it and very seldom do they miss so yeah, I think a clear frog would be something to give a shot!!

LOL!! I take a break from the computer and go outside to get the mail. Find the In-Fisherman magazine in the mailbox. Open it up and what do I see, a article on "The clear connection" ice fishing panfish with clear plastic baits. One of the baits that is talked about is the "Domination Fry" by Micro Spoons!! It's a good article that I thought I'd give everyone a heads up on.

I haven't tried clear frogs.... yet.
But these posts have inspired me to try it.  I had thought about very , very light, translucent watermelon this summer.  But I never got around to trying it.  But I think I might go out to my shed this Saturday and try to make a few "GHOST" frogs.

And hey, if they don't work..... you can always melt them down and add color to them.

And THAT... is what is so cool about making your own baits.  Welcome to the forum Mr. FIN.  We're all glad you are here.  Make yourself at home and enjoy.
