Skirt Mold - How to use it??
« on: 12/13/13 17:18 UTC »
I recently picked up the Skirt mold from Do-it during they're recent sale.  I've just got to shooting it and I am not sure how I am supposed to use it.  Is it only for the grub or can it be used for making tubes?  I bought it with intentions of doing my tubes and hula grubs.  The insert that came in the spline is a set screw.  Am I to cut the plastic back right at the top of the splines and then screw in my insert to make hollow tubes??

Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Most will use one of those soldering irons with the spade tip and put it in a vice then they apply both parts and fuse them together, do a search on you tube I believe there is a video on it.

It can be used for the grub molds or the tube molds.  With the tube molds I like to trim off the tip unscrew the plug with an Allen wrench and put in the appropriate insert.  Then place the whole spline in the tube mold and shoot it.

I'm gonna play around with fishing the skirt as is on a weedless jig too.

Here's a link to a video that Frank did that's THE answer to your question!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_OHozRyI5w

I had the guys back down in maintenance weld a small square plate to my soldering iron and do like Frank shows at the end of the video.

Thanks for the responses.  I've seen Franks videos, he makes everything look so easy.... till you try it and realize he has a pile of skill.

I'll have to look into the soldering iron tip, being able to weld  a skirt on is pretty slick

Jerry, when you trim, do you trim it right back as close you you can to the top of the spline?  I was thinking this would come with a short nose, run a razor blade around it and dump it into your mold and shoot your tube.

That's what I do when I make 2 color tubes.  I don't have a skirt mold, I just cut off the head to the spline and shoot the 2nd color.

I use a set screw in my tube mold for making solid tubes as well.

Yes, I trim it as close as I can.

Thanks for the help.  I'll have to get some plastic going after I dig myself out of the driveway.  I've seen some really cool stuff done by other members on the board I want to try.
