What kind of plastic do you use?
« on: 07/15/11 23:51 UTC »
Ok so I got my 4" croaker mold today and couldn't wait to pour some frogs and test them out. I used Calhoun soft plastic and LC color and glitter. Did the clear dip and let cool and looked sweet and floated in the sink. Went to the pond for a few casts before dark used a 5/0 jig hook and Bait keeper set up and noticed my croaker would not stay afloat. I did catch a few fish but really would like it to float so I can pause and twitch. Went home tried some new plastic I had From LC and added a lot of super bubble floater powder to the mix made a few more frogs and tested them in the sink with a hook on them and they sink. Any thoughts of what I might be doing wrong greatly appreciated.

You are not doing anything wrong, however, I would really discourage you from using the floating additive if it is the little glass bubbles.  I know you can wear stuff to protect you, but they are so dangerous - not worth the risk.  The Croaker is designed to retrieve with short pauses if you want.  We will introduce the Croaker II hopefully around the end of the year and it should have more of the qualities you are looking for.

I have tried everything Scott and not matter how much additive I put in, the croaker will not float.

The floating version will be cool!!! I have been thinking about a soft plastic floater for years. One that will float without the additive so we can use "normal" colors too!!

Thanks for the feed back. Can't wait to see Croaker 2 especially if it floats.  ;D

As much as I hate to, sometimes I use the floater bubbles. In order to make the frogs float a 5/0 hook, the mix of plastic to bubbles HAS TO BE 1:1. That's right, 1:1. I typically will do 4 oz. bubbles (by volume) to 4 oz. Plastisol. The frogs will float, but they will be a bit stiffer.

and, yes, I make sure to have my respirator on before I even open the jar of bubbles.
