Deep Water
« on: 01/02/14 14:53 UTC »
For the past two weeks the fish have disappeared. Could catch a big one or two but the numbers had dropped to five or six fish per day. Wednesday we made our annual New Years Day fishing trip and the catch rate was headed in the same direction. At 2:30 I picked up the old trusty Do-It blade bait and went to bumping the bottom. We finally found most the fish in 35' and it was on. The size wasn't lunker class but by days end  we had 14 nice fish ranging from 1 3/4 to 3 pounds. Didn't take any pictures had to get fish back in the water before their swim bladder blew out their mouth.

Our water temps are lower than I've seen them in five years. It's at 46 now and we have some butt cold weather headed our way for next week. They could go deeper, we've caught them all the way down to 50'. Not a lot of lure selection for this type fishing.

In many lakes in Ohio five or six bass a day is not a bad day.

Thats one of the 2 doit molds ive been eying :)

The water has been cold here as well about 42 with the exception of the powerplant that pumps 52 degree water out into the lake in a limited area

The mold has great action. I do recommend not using the hooks suggested. Use a split ring with a good Mustad or Gammy  treble hook.

That's what I use. I think they are 4's. The split rigs are a pain to put on but the better quality hook is well worth it.

5 bass any where is a good day but basskat  isn't just any fisherman. Wal mart band him from fishing the mud puddles in the parking lot because catching to many. He catches bass above the ice. The dead sea is only dead because he kept every fish he caught.

Wish I was that good, wouldn't be working in a tire factory for the past 29 years!

We've got a lake out my way called Bullards Bar.  The lake is has many very steep cliffs and can be very deep.  This time of the year, when the water temp is in the mid- 40's, it's not unusual to catch bass in 75 feet of water.

A couple years ago a friend and I were fishing on his boat Bullards bar. He put a 2 ounce weight on his line and let it sink next to the transducer.  We could actually see that the sinker drop to the bottom of the lake. We were sitting in about 80 feet of water time. The fish finder allowed us to see the sink or drop. As it hit the bottom we actually saw the fish rise rise from the bottom for an instant and then settle back down into the  lake bottom.  It was way cool.
Until next time.
