Icy Perch
« on: 01/11/14 15:36 UTC »
My buddy Kyle felt he had to go all the way "down south" to hook up with some good ice fishing this weekend.  There's some decent ice fishing a little closer to home but I think he had the right idea.  The extreme Northern parts of Missouri are on fire with good fish these days.  Kyle called it a "suicide bite"... how profound.

That's got to be a photo crop or something. Perch simply do not grow that big.

All of 13" and I'd believe 14. Ice must be "iffy" on this side of the Mason -Dixon line....ice picks around the neck. If those were dink perch they'd have small heads and larger than proportionate bodies. These are a nice shape, not small.

Mr. Kyle doesn't tread on ice...  ANY ice... without picks at hand.  One thing I'll say about him is "he ain't stupid" and I was really only kidding about not believing him.  He knows better than to "stretch" the facts with me.   ;)

They look like really good perch to me. Nice big bellies!

If he likes to fish thin ice...or you're a big fella like me...He should really think about getting one of these Mustang Survival Float Coats. The are a USCG approved flotation device...and darn warm!

I wear one starting in late fall...and it stays on until I can wear my inflatable like jacket in the spring. My wife bought me one a few years ago because she worries about me (constantly!) ...but in particular...fishing in the fall and early winter on the river. Not only is it a life jacket, but it's a good idea to wear when you have a bunch of guys on the river blasting ducks and deer!!!

Well my guess would be those perch were caught up north with the dark green color. Perch down south are more white in color. The size ? He should have brought them to the scales. He would have had a record or some kind.
