Plastisol Questions
« on: 01/19/14 16:05 UTC »
I am using Caney Creek Plastisol.  One batch is 2.5 years old and the other is 2 years old.

1.  Does it ever go bad?

2.  If it does go bad, how long?

3.  Does it make cloudy baits when it goes bad?

Here is a pic.  The baits on the left are 1 drop Watermelon X2 and the baits on the right are 1 drop watermelon X2.  The only difference is the baits are from different containers of plastisol.  I heated both to 350-360 F.  Both are CCM Crystal Clear (?)  Not so clear on the right.  What would cause this?  I have about a 1 gal left on this container.  I hate to just throw it away but I need clear colors to fish the clear water in my area.

Thoughts?

Get it out of the box and stir it. Then make dark baits it will hide the yellowing.

Ditto re Bugpac.  Now that addresses the fix, but not the cause.  I'm thinking that at your last party a couple of your buddies put a few drops of Split Pea X2 into that colorant.
Until next time.

Don't discard it. you will find a dark or black to use it on.  Are the baits unusually oily or sticky?

make sure its mixed good. last year i started bustin the box open then cutting the flaps off. what i do after is pull the bag out & move it around & roll it around to get it mixed good. the only thing i use the box now for is to hold the bag & when the bag is empty i toss my sprus in it

Thanks for all the comments.  I guess the ultimate question is can I get clear baits from it?  I will try these suggestions and see.  The problem is even darker colors are drab

I would completley remove it from the bag. Scrape all the stuff stuck on the bag and mix well. You may expierment and mix new plastic 50/50 and salvage it. Id cut the heat back as well

I had this happen when I got low on my last gallon.  Shake the crap out of it.  Seems it settles a bit, and just rotating the box doesn't cut it.  I shake well before every use now.

Mixing each time before you draw any plastic from the box is CRITICAL... (I don't care if you just shook it 5 min. ago)  You can mix it in between as you might see fit, but if you aren't mixing the plastic thoroughly each time you use it you will likely find the first half gallon to be working just fine and then find the plastic not to be performing up to par...  TOO LATE! - You have just jacked the whole chemistry of the entire box and the only practical thing you can do is mix it with some fresh (well mixed) plastisol to salvage it.

It really is that simple.

You might get clear out of the box but after it sits your your bench you will notice that it will turn an opaque cream color.  Just like the others have asked, do your baits feel real oily or sticky?  After they have say around for a few days.  If so, that would be the PVC or resin in the plastic not being mixed around enough.  If you really want to mix it well cut your bag open and pour it into another container.  I use a small paint mixer to stir mine.  Stir it for a few minutes, just be real carful about stiring in air.  If that happens heat you plastic like you normally would and just let the air bubbles travel to the top and then scoop them off.  You might have to do this a few times.  When reheating to get bubbles out, only reheat for 30 seconds at a time. Maybe less depending on your microwave.  If you use a presto pot you shouldn't have to worry about the micro bubbles to much because they will just cook themselves right out.   I hope this helps you.
