3.5" carrot lami plate
« on: 01/27/14 09:28 UTC »
I have the 3.5 carrot 10 carrot mold and I love it. Ive made about 200 baits and ive only had 2 carrots come out with minimal defects (my fault). I want the lami plate but im a little confused, does the lami plate allow you to shoot all 10 cavities at once? Thanks Jim

Yes...it would allow you to shoot all the cavities at once in one color, then replace the laminate plate with the standard plate and then shoot the 2nd color on all the baits.

Its best to do it with a twin injector.  But if you are low on funds the lami plate works.  Just be sure you hear your other color well enough to get a good lam or else it will pull apart right down the middle.  If I use a lami plate (very rare) I like to shoot the second color while the first color is still somewhat warm and the plastic is just a bit tacky.

too....

Something to think about here. The factory plates are great for shooting the single-side laminates. But try making a thin plate for that mold as well.

Use a small fine file to cut some vent lines in the mold half that hasn't got them to the end of each cavity and use some punch metal to make your plate. It cuts easily with a scissors. Using the thin plate you can shoot BOTH halves of the mold at a time. You can double your production time by using the other half of the thin plates shot for your next injection.

Andy will also tell you that fishing the half-baits like a leech is a super way to expand you tackle box too. Just shoot the colors you want with the colors you want and go fishing with them without the laminate.

Tom, you lost me lol. Do you mean that instead of doing the entire laminate to fish with only half of the bait? Just wondering. Also, I've read a bunch of threads that a lot of folks will hand pour 1 side and inject the other color afterwards thus giving a more realistic overall bait. I will try that tonight before I order the plate. Thanks again for all the replies Jim!

Thanks again guys! I made a makeshift plate out of a soda can and baits came out near perfect. As soon as I figure out how to post pics I will put some up. Thanks again this forum is awesome!

Right....near perfect he says. They look a bit closer than that to me. Very nice looking baits.

There was a very small amount of bleed over on the heads but nothing the fish wil see (I hope). It wasn't that difficult but I think that the 1st color as a hand pour and then injection may yeild a better more natural look. I wouldn't have been able to do any off this if it wasnt for this forum!

I thought of that while looking at the halves. It would be a very "flimsy" type bait I would imagine but everything has its time and place

And its loose, flimsy action is one of its best features...tie a dropshot rig or similar, so the hook is "sideways" not hook-point-up, so Your hook holds plenty plastic and the bait still rides flat and "swims" like a Leech.  Those are pretty serious.  Everything eats Leeches.
