Hand Lamintate fail - my hats to you artists
« on: 01/31/14 13:19 UTC »
Hey guys, well my hats off to you artists for sure now...

I just tried my first hand pour laminate. All the videos and pictures and thread discussions you guy make it look and sound so easy...lol well let me say..you guys are true artists.

I though wow how hard can it be to pour out of the pyrex cup - ah ya harder then it looks..Anyways just a fun post to show, time to head to Home Depot and grab me some sheeting and or a few ready made laminate plates...lol

On a side good note - I was happy with the color turn out

I bet those would work pretty good to be honest. The colors are great in my books. Maybe hotter on the pours would help? Mine seem to flow pretty easy

You have to get your bottom color hotter, Looks almost like you poured it whe the plastic was way to cool.  350.  Pour slow and make sure you have an even fill all the way across the belly portion.   The bait you have there will work just fine.  I use stuff like this all the time.  Thats what I like about mess ups.  They fill my tackle box.

Nice color combo. the belly it a nice pearl. i like to get my plastic where its really loose in the cup when using pyrex. The pyrex with the thinner spouts can work wonders

Thanks for being nice guys...ya the baits will find their way into my tacklebox..I don't mind using them lots of practice needed though still fun..but ya it's definitely not as easy as it looks.

It takes practice and a (somewhat) steady hand.  Those look no worse than my first attempts.  A year ago I wouldn't have been pouring bellies in the 1.75" croaker like I am now.  I like my plastic hot and runny so it flows well.  Especially when doing 3 color baits!  Wutz its are good molds for learning  hand pour laminates.  The only carrot I have is the 1.75" crappie carrot, no handpours for me on that.  I'm not a ninja like Tom.

Grayth.... sit down with some junk plastic in very contrasting colors and practice the hand pouring. The contrasting colors will help show where attention needs to be paid on what you're doing. Use stabilizer and heat the plastic up to 350-360 four hand pouring. As Nick mentions it needs to be sort of runny and the smaller the bait, the runnier.

This might be the first time I've seen that someone has come to us with pics of their rejects... that means a lot if you ask me.  It's difficult for anyone here to help troubleshoot any issues without having a look at what's going on.

I really can't add much to what has already been said.  These guys have you on the right track and all you need now is more practice.  Playing around with scrap plastic is a wonderful way to develop a technique that you can then repeat with the "prime time" stuff.

Stick with it and show us the pics when you nail it, cause I'm pretty sure you'll have nailed it in shortly.  You're almost there.

Grayth, we have all been there.  Don't be hard on yourself. It takes patience and practice. I would still use those.  The fish don't care what they look like. I bet you catch a ton of fish on those. I like using the one cup Pyrex when doing hand pours. I feel I have more control with the smaller cup. Keep it up and don't be discouraged. Keep posting pics please.  Have fun!

Few things in nature are perfect, grayth.  Stick a hook in them and fish 'em.  Think positive.  It'll definitely be something they haven't seen before.  Lol
Until next time.

I'm with Denny... put a hook in them.

I've had some real bad looking stuff in my earliest years, and then in my later years, I would fish goofy stuff on purpose (like a 2x2) as a personal challenge and as a bet to others... when it comes to bass, they have bigger mouths than brains!

It's just like fishing, nothing beats time on the water to get good at it. I'm pretty sure a fish don't look at a bait and say "Hey that line's not straight, better not eat it!" Fish'em, they'll eat it.

Thanks everyone for their input - here's documenting my second attempt.

This time I went with making my own handmade laminate plate with sheeting I grabbed from home depot, cut to size roughly and drilled a hole for the pin to fit.
I noticed on the injection things are a bit messy since it really isn't the perfect fit - better clamping should help on the next try. Either way I was concerned they might not turn out.

Closed her up and injected the second color..and was surprised, wow it surprised me at how well it actually turned out.
