My Newest Swim Jig
« on: 02/19/14 12:55 UTC »
I'm waiting for spring and after 31" of snow in a week and now with freezing rain coming down I needed to get my mind off the weather and there is no better way than to make some tackle!!!! This is a 3/8oz swim Jig made with the Do-it Trokar Pro Swim Jig mold, it has a 5/0 Mustad 32796 heavy wire flat eye hook and 50 strands of pearl silicone skirt material. The head is pearl powder over a white powder base and it has an oversize 3D eye in a color called super pearl which looks blue against a pearl body and will reflect other colors as well, very cool eyes to check out. I will sometimes throw oversize eyes on baits to draw attention to the head and when I say oversize I don't mean really big, just a size larger is all that is required, on this one it calls for a 5/32" and I used a 3/16". I'm really liking this mold, it pours well and the design should be great for coming through grass and brush in general, and the fact it uses a heavy wire flipping style hook means you can use heavy braid and fish in some nasty cover, come on spring!!!

Nice. I'll be making a bunch of jigs tomorrow. 46 and sunny here today. My spring fever is reaching a dangerous level. Painted a hunk of lead with some vinyl paint from Napa a little while ago to see if it's durable like the stuff Barlows sells. Don't know if it's the same stuff or not. I hope so. It's cheaper and available locally.------Tim.

Very nice, I like those eyes!

White is my go to color for swim jigs especially for Northern Pike in the spring. I watch the jig while I'm fishing it in the shallows and if it disappears I set the hook! It's amazing how those big girls can come up and eat a jig...and then only thing you feel is the "puttt" ...when they spit it out!

Super jig!! That's about the only color I fish. If they won't hit white...they won't hit!!

Thanks for the kind words guys, I still like the smaller "northern style" but I'm excited to try these in some areas I know will have some big fish. I'm a spinnerbait fanatic but the last 2 season the swim jig has been putting more fish in the boat but I don't think the fish here are seeing it as much so they aren't conditioned to it.

Lamar, that is a little deal I took from my buddy Cadman, he uses red for his skirts and I liked the look too so I got some red 24 gauge wire and I use it on bright colored skirts, thanks for the words man.

Your welcome. I also like the black weed guard. Most guys would have used a clear or a white. But the black gives it a different look. I might have to steel your ideas here.

That is what this is all about my friend, exchanging ideas, I know I get a ton of ideas from the baits you and others post and I hope my stuff provide you and others with ideas that you can take away, it is why I give details on the hooks, skirt material and even the eyes so if you see something you like you can add it  to your baits.

Your sincere willingness to share your ideas, thoughts, expertise, and helpful suggestions sets the bar for the rest of us Smalljaw. This has helped many in our small communities. It has not gone unnoticed and I personally want to thank you once again for this. In addition, that is one good looking swim jig! I hope things are well for you. Hang in there, spring is around the corner!

Smalljaw, do you mind to tell me where you got those eyes? I really like there looks. I love the swim jig you made too. Do you always use a base coat before your final coat of powder paint? I noticed it really stands out white.
Those would surely catch bass around here. I fish Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley quit often, and that"s a good bait there.
I too, like the black weed guard, I  don't  know why I haven't thought of trying that. Actually I do , I have no artistic talent.
  Cool jig.
