Man that really stinks for that guy. But I guess it's karma. I wonder why it is only a 1 trout limit though? Seems very low

I've been following the story on this critter. Too bad, but rules are rules.

If another licensed fisherman took the first fish seems to me he still only had one. Now if he can prove that or not is a different story.

mrex....

The key here is possession. Ontario rules for that water clearly say that if a fish is NOT returned immediately to the water, the person catching it is in possession of it and will be for that day even if the fish is given away or eaten or froze. The Ontario CO's found him in possession of a smaller trout earlier. The larger fish put him over the limit when he kept it.

I am not saying that I agree with the rule, but if you fish a particular water with specific rules, follow them. Its simple. If the rules are something people don't feel they can follow, fish somewhere else. Lac La Croix is a trophy water in large part due to its serious application of rules to limit harvest.

Our Trout limit is 25 so if there is 3 in the boat we are allowed 75 fish. We use a clicker to count fish going into cooler does not really matter who catches the fish. If there was a 4th person in the boat not fishing but has a  license we can put 100 in the boat.  We get checked for possession and length every blue moon.  Coast Guard pulled me over a couple trips ago and checked the boat out real good but was not even interested in the fish box.

Guess different laws for different places

I got warned in Michigan one time while three of us were fishing salmon. The limit was three and we had three fish on a stringer. He asked us who's stringer that was and I was sitting down not fishing at the time said mine. Then he said your done fishing, that's your limit. He then explained to me if I would have been fishing at the time I would have got fined for fishing while having my limit. After that we have read the rules a lot closer and bring three stringers.

Is salmon the only fish in the water? We get a limit of one fish say Trout just start releasing them and keeping Redfish catch that might as well go for flounder. I have never limited out on everything. . Regs seem lot stricter up there. Then again they call Louisiana Sportsman Paradise.

A lot of states have similar laws.  Many do not enforce them, or just on certain lakes.  Alabama has these laws.  They are enforced on Crappie more than any other fish.  On the piers in the Florida gulf game wardens will wear plain clothes and ticket those who catch more than two king mackerel even if they give them away.  If they don't basket net them and immediately release them.  It the fish is gaffed, they are ticketed.

I fished a bass tournament in Wisconsin a few years ago and they have a no cull rule. If you put the bass in the live well then it goes to the scale. When you get five fish in the well then your done. I sat out there for four hours of no fishing waiting for my non boater from Wisconsin to get his limit.

Also some states (like Michigan) have a mulpital species rule.Michigan your allowed five fish combination: Bass, Walleye, Northern. I think only three can be northern (Benn a while since I've been up there. This is to prevent you from continual fishing after you have five fish.

Here in AK we can continue to fish for a species even if we have our limit as long as any fish intended to be released are quickly released without being removed from the water.
That and the fact there are often other species to catch.
But we have very strict regs for some species and like it has been said rules are rules and we all need to follow them.
