Problems with Lt. purple flake
« on: 03/08/14 22:25 UTC »
Does anyone have any tips to resolve this issue? I am shooting some baits in CC Green with Lt. purple flake. The first heat up comes out great, then on remelt my baits are coming out with a very strong purple tint. I watch my temps. very close and it happens at about 320. Any advise would be helpful. Thank you.

All purple glitter is a dog for bleeding on subsequent re-heats. All I can suggest is that you heat only as warm as you need to get the plastic at a workable consistency and see if that helps. I don't add any of the purple glitters until after the initial full cooking of the plastic and re-heats don't get above 320 degrees.

Lure craft has a color called black grape, it is very similar to purple and does no bleed.

I haven't noticed any bleeding with holo purple from do-it.  But I've mostly used it in darker colors.  I'll try it in clear, maybe tomorrow if I have time.

Save yourself a ton of money and go to hobby lobby and get some purple giltter.  I have very big and very fine from there.  Its great.  Doesnt bleed or shrink.  Holds up real nice, reheat after reheat.  I use all glitter from the hobby stores, except for red, gold and silver,  those are the ones that tend to bleed or melt.   Also check out some of the pearl powders they have there. Pretty awesome stuff.

Is that the tree house brand glitter from hobby lobby? I looked at it but it didn't say what it was made from.

My results with hobby store glitter have been mixed.  The best ones label what they are and say colorfast or color safe.  Others might be not labeled at all.  Some polyester glitters hold up to heat well and don't shrink or warp but bleed like crazy.  Buy small cheap containers from different brands and test them out in very small batches of clear or pearl plastic.  Hobby Lobby has some of the better glitters, that's where I'd start.  Joanne's glitters have mostly flopped.  Definitely do look for pearl powders as well.  I'll be picking up the whole collection of Pearlex powders at some point, they've been great.  I haven't found them in stock in stores around here.  But you can buy them on Joanne's website.  Get on Joanne's mailing list, they send out 40%-60% coupons all the time.

Also, the glitter has an MSDS sheet.  The store should have those on hand.  You can see what they are made of and what the melting point is.
