Hot plate
« on: 07/09/14 10:34 UTC »
Last time I used a hot plate the glass Pyrex cup broke, it may have been the style hotplate, but i want  to buy one from somewhere today that will work the  Pyrex class so I don't have to use the microwave to keep heating it up

You CANNOT put a glass container directly on the burner of a hot plate. You have to use a grid of some sort on the burner and the glass on top of the grid.

What do you mean by grid?

Like a cookie sheet or similar. Put the cookie  sheet on the burner and set the pryex on the cookie sheet.

okay, so just no direct heat from the stove to the glass, it needs a layer inbetween?

They make diffusers that fit atop of electric burners to do this.  Try Ace hardware.

Forman,

Just my $0.02...if you're going to invest in new equipment, make the switch from microwave to Pot And Electric Burner.  Burner with Fine Adjustment, not "low, medium, high"...and I use a 1-quart stainless saucepan with a thick bottom.  I highly recommend this method, and I will NEVER go back to a microwave.

The stoves shown that have the flat surface will work with pyrex and direct contact. They'd work with what Gary is suggesting too. It depends on the volume of plastic you are cooking or working with. Small quantities [4-8 ounces] using a burner/pot are going to be a super sized challenge to keep at a workable heat without issues. For dealing with over a cup the pot might may suit you better. You have to make up your own mind what will work for you. Ten people can offer ten suggestions but those ten suggestions work for them and maybe give you a headache trying get it to work for you.

Mr. Tom touched on something I left out...  A pot is larger diameter than Pyrex cups so mixes do need to be fairly substantial.  Less than about 6 oz.s (starting total) is hard to work with.  Most of my virgin batches start with 12 oz.s...

I have a hot plate in the garage that I use when mega-casting lead... more than once I have thought about using it for plastics, but keep dismissing the thought based on my experience with a presto pot. Reading your conviction, I want give it a try in the near future... I'm just not fishing enough to need any more baits right now... Ha, Ha, Ha,... I said "need".   :D

I'm familiar with the lack of need, but I'm regularly upgrading.  A few bags of baits and scraps, softener or not, more/different colorant or not...BAM...brand new ones.  Lovely.  And it keeps Ya shawp.
