Here are a couple colors of powder paint I have been using lately with decent results. The purple has been hot and today took all of the fish when coupled with a purple/chartreuse tail 1.5" stinger bait. Today we had a heavy overcast and light rain with a terribly screwed up barometer....snow is actually mentioned for tonight. On Monday of this week the coral color got as much attention as the purple blend.



The purple is actually transparent candy purple blended with transparent candy pink, about 7 parts purple to 1 of pink. Blue and red micro glitter round the color out.

The coral color is Ruby Slipper and transparent candy orange, 50/50 mix.

I have begun to coat all of my jigs with Do-It's UV spray now. After having some time to spend comparing heads coated with uv spray to those not coated and used side by side on several occasions and seeing the coated heads catch while uncoated heads fished with baits NOT containing uv enhancement catch fewer or no fish, the uv is going on regardless. Today was serious cloudy and we fished both coated and uncoated heads using 1" pieces of nightcrawler. The uncoated heads went untouched fished in an identical fashion in identical water. The fishing was tough with the wind and weather conditions.

I mentioned the observations to Jerry the other day when I talked to him. I fished the UV coated heads and plastics out of bags in my pockets. My buddy was fishing out of my box, of course, and was fishing plain old painted heads plastics without any uv enhancement. He didn't see much action until I gave him one or two of my personal stash. Today with the real tough bite and action only on uv heads and/or enhanced plastics was the convincer for me.

We fished under a bridge where the wind allowed us to reach the pylons running down into the bottom. 40 foot casts with 1/32 heads was something else. But the wind was hauling in colder air and as the temps fell, so did our desire to stand out in it. Our news at 6 re-confirmed the chance of snow yet tonight and early tomorrow. I sure wish it would go to Missouri instead.

Oddly enough, The fish dig a very similar purple red blue glitter tail on a candy red jig below the Prairie Du Sac dam (Wisconsin River). Those two colors (especially the candy red) seem to light up in that slightly tanic stained water.

Interesting observations on your UV experiment. Are these the CS brand UV products or something else ?

LOL Like you did/do, I keep my experimental stuff separate from my regular stuff so I can fish them head to head with my fishing buddy. Last falls experiment was using UV powder top coated jigs vs non UV heads. I didn't notice that the UV coated jigs made any difference in the number of fish caught vs the non UV jigs. To be fair, I only made a few trips with the UV jigs so in my case I can't really can't draw any solid conclusions one way or another about the addition of UV leading to more fish or not.

Re: the UV spray. I am curious as to how long that stuff stays on a jighead. By that I mean, is it permanent? Does it wash off in time? How often do you need to reapply it if it does wash off?  etc

I use the clear coat dip on some of my jigs. The only trouble with it is you have to watch for the drip to form on the front of the jig (hanging by the hook) CTom which do you think is better. Drip or spray?

While it's not considered "permanent", its about as close as you get.  You WILL NOT wash it off.  It WILL scrape / scratch or wear off, but you won't wash it off.  Take a crank bait for instance...  If you're not sure that you want it to reflect ultra violet light, than I would not suggest spraying it with Do-It's UV spray because you will never get it all off.

A jig head might be a little different, especially if you're fishing in rocks or bouncing them off bridge pilings or something.  Then you may need to, and should, periodically reapply.

Tom when will you admit that Missouri is the center of everything right in this world  just move down where you can live in the basement like the rest of the old folks do. I'll schedule the oats bus to stop every day so you can go to town and you will still have a sense of independence

Thanks for the info Jerry. I fish rocks a lot so maybe it's best I stick with the powder UV stuff. I plan on using UV in my plastics so maybe it doesn't matter in the long run.

In my plastic I love the powder product meant for use with it. The topical stuff I use on the jigs and lake trout blades is the spray. I don't care for the way the powdered uv stuff fogs over the original color. The spray stuff might not be as durable in the long haul but the heads stay absolutely brilliant with color and I can always give the head a little touch up shot if needed.

Agree. I don't care for the cloudy affect the powder UV stuff has on my jigs either. It probably doesn't matter to the fish but it bugs me. Looks like I'm going to have to check out the spray on stuff.
