Working on some crickets
« on: 10/10/14 20:29 UTC »
Here's a fly that I tied up today. I'm trying to find a decent cricket pattern and this is a scaled down hopper pattern. I think it might be what I'm looking for. Sorry about the poor quality photos, I took them with my iPad

Nice job!

I used to be able to do stuff like that. Its a bummer getting old and eyes that don't see well enough to focus on that small stuff.

A little tic-tic followed by a little twitch and that fly will be gobbled up quick.  Good job.
Until next time.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm hoping to give it a test out sometime in the next week if I have time.

Mo: Everything on it will make 'er float haha, the body is foam, the wing is deer, the legs are rubber, and the sighter is a poly yarn that doesn't absorb water.

I don't think Mo's quite convinced.  He can be a little dense ya know.  Maybe you should send me say a half dozen of those little fly ties. I'll get them wet a few times and try to convince him that they do indeed float.  I can't promise that I won't need another half dozen to get the job done, but I'll try.

That's a very nice tie, good work.  I'll bet it's a killer in hopper colors too.   ;)

Haha well I'd better just send with a dozen and a half to make sure

I'm hoping to try it out in hopper colors when I get the foam I ordered a few days ago. I ended up getting 6 different colors I think, black, white, green, yellow, blue, and red. I'll be able to make some pretty interesting hoppers, crickets, and beetles with those colors haha.

For anyone who wants 2mm foam for fly tying, definitely go with craft foam (I got mine from amazon for $6 free shipping) instead of getting the name brand foam. Each sheet of foam I'm getting is 8.5"x11" or so and two sheets of each color.

Great looking tie! I know those will catch fish. I've always wondered if something like that tied on a jighead would work. The body would give the fish something to hang on and the deer hair would probably release some bubbles when you pulled it. Foam rubber on a jig! Something else to try.

I think it would look pretty cool on a jig, you could even modify it a bit to make it look like a hellgrammite.

Slight side note here: Where is a good place to get small jigs? Small enough for little bug ties, not sure exact size though. Recommendations?

Most of the guys on my fly board would recomment 1/80th to 1/100th, they mostly use a 4 or 5 weight fly rod.

Alright, thanks for the info. I also use a 5 wt so I'll have to get a hold of a few to tie on and see how they fall.
