Walleye Tubes?
« on: 12/11/14 12:50 UTC »
Has anyone had any luck fishing walleyes with tubes? I've heard of the accidental catch of a walleye with a tube while someone was bass fishing, but no one targeting walleyes with a tube. I'm thinking about putting a thump grub on the back of a tube jig, putting the tube bait on and using it as a rip bait off of the bottom. Only problem is that so often walleye hit "short." Any opinion  from you guys?

I have used them specifically for eyes through the ice and they do work. They were 2" Swordtails that Gittzit used to make. Those were some killer little tails that I caught everything from panfish to northerns on.  They made a 2 a 3 and 4" version. They may still make the 4" ? Dunno. Those Swordtails are what got me wanting to get into making my own plastics.

Big Shirt, those Swordtail Tubes, was that a tube with a flat tail, possibly made by dipping a rod at an angle then not cutting the open-end into legs, like a stinger tube?

My best fishing with tubes for walleyes was done fishing them just the Super Doo baits....drop to the bottom, lift up 4" to a foot and hold. Do nothing....let them swim while you drift and jig another rod. I cut off a chunk of old worm and slip it into the body for some extra hook holding. I use a conventional jig. I have never needed a stinger on this set up.

BKJ. Pretty much. They were/are regular tubes cut diagonally so they come to a point.  Killer little baits under a float or jigged through the ice.

No doubt regular tubes would work dead sticked like CT said. That's something I wanted to try this fall. Unfortunately, the river froze up before I could give it a go.

A person could slice the last 1/2 of a 4" Carrot into tentacles and fish it the way I described and do well on winter walleyes....from a boat. The do-nothing approach is the ticket while drifting.

I'll have to give some of these ideas a try. Thanks for the input.

I catch a lot of walleyes on tubes. Especially when  I'm fishing current breaks for smallmouth, the walleye are hanging out in the same areas...especially when the water is cool.

I used tubes for walleyes years ago (and had one really good year in particular), but day in and day out, I tend to gravitate towards a little more action in the bait.  For the ten or so years, I have been going big with great success... the only time I really go back to more "traditional" sized baits is in the summer.
