In house plastic comparison
« on: 12/12/14 11:20 UTC »
Lets limit this to the 2 plastics found here at Do-It.

What are some of the differences between the Essential series plastics and the Crystal Clear that you have taken note of? I am really starting to like using this plastic and have found a few that I'll name.

*no or very few bubbles in the Essential
*faster conversion time for the Essential but a higher first cook time and temperature to eliminate the " initial thick" consistency
* tolerance to higher heat in the Essential, especially when cooked without stabilizer
* the overall color clarity in the Essential plastic

My re-melts have been excellent using both plastics but the Essential seems to be ready faster at a lower heat which is nice now and again.... it depends on what I am doing with the plastic....how I am going to use it.

On the initial cook it seems that it takes a slightly higher heat than what we have been acclimated to using the Crystal Clear products. I'm finding that getting the Essential up to 365 degrees on that first cook makes the first round of use way easier than if I stop the first cook at 350. At 350 the Essential is still very thick, almost clumpy, on the first cook. Re-heats and re-melts are getting done easily with the plastic as low as 310 degrees in some instances.

In many colors I no longer use stabilizer when using the Essential. Its tolerance to higher heat levels is a thing of beauty for me especially when I jack the heat for welding baits.

The lack of bubbling issues is a biggie. Being able to pump on the first cooking without having to wait for bubbles to disperse is great.

Color clarity seems to be much easier to maintain with the Essential and clear is clear.

I'd like to hear what others have found with it.

Has anybody tried mixing remelts?

I'm planning on getting some essential plastic when my current supply runs out; then when use my various baits, I'm not sure I will be able to keep them separated in my mind to put in the proper "recycle bucket".   Basically, I'm looking ahead to how focused I might need to be with mixing or not mixing the plastic.

Any words of caution Jerry?

I have done some mixed re-melts without any issues.

I can't see how there could be any ill effects from mixing the two.  They're blood family members after all.

Yep less bubbling, no browning and higher heat tolerance here too. Now that you mention it I have notice that my initial heat takes a good 30-45 seconds longer than with the clear series. I also think it has a better elactisty than the clear.

Yup. The elasticity is much greater in the Essential.

Denny I think mentioned that he bought a tanker truck full of Essential, anyone else making a switch over from the Crystal?

I'm on my 2nd gallon...and I've noticed you need to get it to about 360 on the first heat also. I've also noticed the elasticity...when I pull the little plug of plastic out of the nozzle on my injector it is a lot easier with Essential!!

I very seldom break the stands on the Tube skirts with Essential.

Just remember to mix it every time you use it! (I'm convinced this is the cause of a LOT of issues with all brands of plastic!)

It's amazing how many times you can reheat it.

Not sure if I'm going to give up using the crystal clear yet, but I think my next order will be essential series. The higher heat tolerance of the ess plastic is the biggest selling point for me.  I have mixed remelts from both types without any problems.

I've been softening mine at a ratio of about 2 ounces to a one pint bottle of plastic. Its still super elastic and handles fine...just slightly different. In small baits it is super for action at this mix. I did a comparison using this mixing guide between the Essential and CC Medium whipped up the same way. The Essential came out on top as far as my preference is concerned.

A spoonful of HD sinking additive to your batch of essential plastic will give you a ton of stretch.

I feel like staying up all night making plastics to use what I have, just to try the new stuff.  It will be a little warmer this weekend so maybe I'll have my plastic spree then.

Yep, I'm preferring it as well for all the reasons mentioned. It does take some getting used to, but it's forgiving stuff.  No problems mixing it w/ the crystal clear. Haven't tried hda with it yet, probably will be awhile before I do.
