Scale pattern with powder paint?
« on: 01/04/15 21:21 UTC »
Is there a way to paint a scale type pattern with powder paint not using an airbrush setup?  I've been using a piece of screen held over the bait. Am I wasting my time trying to get too detailed with the powder?

Ive tried to get a good scale pattern with the powder paint and this is about as good as I can come up with.  Anybody got any ideas for the more detailed pattern?

What you are doing is about the best I've come up with.  I don't do it much anymore because it time consuming when you do a lot of them.

That looks pretty dern good to me.  I don't know what you're after exactly but it's pretty hard to get much more out of powder coat, nice work.

I think that's a pretty awesome looking spinner bait. I'd fish it.

Thanks for the compliments. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and like detail. That is my version of a rocket shad. It's 5/8oz flies a country mile and catches fish when it's cold. It's a go to for me when the ice melts.  Thanks Do-It for such a versatile mold!!

Powder paint the base coat pearl white, let it cool just a bit and fold a small piece of nylon/plastic screen around the head and tap a small paint brush with powder paint over the screen. The powder will be fairly loose after you pull the screen off. Just reheat the head to melt the paint, flip the head and repeat. Tap the paint brush with the color on the top of the head to give it the solid color on the back.

Be sure you don't have the head too hot or the screen will melt to it. I bought the screen at Walmart in the hardware dept for $8 for a roll that will take a month of Sundays to use up.

Glad to share and I hope this works for ya. It may take a head or two to figure it out but it's still fun.
