hollow topwater frog material?
« on: 03/01/15 13:48 UTC »
Does anyone happen to know what type of plastic most hollow bodied frogs and mice are made out of? Ive seen references to pvc...but not sure. Whatever material it is it's obviously paintable/printable with designs. Ive tried melting them in the microwave, so I'm pretty sure its not plastisol.

Also, is hard plastisol similar? I'm in the market for a soft, but very resilient plastic/synthetic rubber.

Thanks guys

Welcome aboard ladoga2015.

Basically all plastics used in tackle are some sort of pvc plastisol, just some are less hard than others. The soft plastic we use in making the baits here are soft, but in degrees. Some are very soft and can tear easily while others can be made fairly stiff and firm and have the durability of a tire. Still, they are all considered soft plastic. The hollow bodied frogs that I have used, like a Spro frog are made from similar plastic to what we make here but "not quite" what we make here. Then too there are frogs that use the same type of plastic found in use here.

The plastics we make here can be painted as long as a cover dip is used to protect the paint coat.

The Essential series plastic which is relatively new here and to the marketplace is very, very resilient. Hardener can be added to about 10% of the volume to make it much stiffer and I do believe there are some here that can attest to the resilience or durability. Another option would be a plastic formula specific to saltwater use.

Haha, I guess that's why I've seen references to pvc...because it IS pvc. Live and learn...Thanks for the info, I'll definitely give it a go.

You say painting is possible, but needs to be coated? What does that process entail? Type of paint...etc.

Thanks for your help :)

...and one more question...the big soft swimbaits, like the savage gear soft 4plays...are those just hard plastisol too?

I would assume so.

Andrew is the techie guy to find out most of this stuff. He works in the industry....I just play in it. He must be away this weekend....maybe on the ice fishing. He'll jump in and set me straight when he gets near a computer.
