Alternatives for lead
« on: 05/27/15 05:24 UTC »
I want to hop into making my own jigs and weights in addition to the soft plastics that I just started with.  With increasing lead restrictions though I want to ask all of you experienced folk a couple questions.  I'm going to be living in Massachusetts for a couple years and I believe lead weights under an OZ are not allowed there.  Are there alternatives I can use that still work in the melting pots and molds that Do-It sells?  Will everything like painting and finishing be the same as well?  Any advice is great, thank you!

Tin will work.  It is about 2/3rds. the weight of lead and remains shiny. powder Painting is a little touchier as the melt point is lower than lead.  Oh; it is much more expensive than lead as well, so the larger the casting the more you will notice the expense.

People also cast in Bismuth. I have never used it but I know Cadman does on occasion.
Bismuth is 611 pounds per cubic foot and lead is 707.96 tin is 455.67.
I have heard bismuth can be hard to remove from the molds.

I had a small sample of Bismuth and it is very brittle too.

I broke a flutter jig.
