Zonar Mold - Please bring back
« on: 06/18/15 07:45 UTC »
I have a couple ZR-4-24 Zonar molds and the resulting product is popular amongst my fishing pals. However, the mold only produces 1//4 and 1/2 oz baits and the general concensus is a 5/8th and 7/8th or 3/4 and 1oz would would be ideal for fall and winter conditions. Did a larger version of the Zonar exisit and if not I would love to see one. No eyes, just the oblong smooth head. There is something about the action that I cannot see but can certainly feel so maybe they are on to something.

Well actually 2 molds, Mold 1 - 2 cavity 5/8 and 2 cav 7/8; Mold 2 - 2 cavitites 3/4 and 2 cavities 1 oz if that is not possible. A single mold to produce 1 each 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, and 1 oz all using the ZB-M blade
Wishing y'all tight lines and bent wriggling rods. Happy Fishing!

I would also buy those, plus the larger inserts for them!

I'd kill for a 1 oz, 1.25 and/or 1.5 ounce blade bait mold.  Down here in Texas when fishing for Stripers and hybrids most people want nothing smaller than 3/4 ounce.  Got that one covered.

A-Men brother... I'm in.  That animal exists somewhere in the Do-It archives... I have the prototypes.

I agree. A larger blade bait would be great for sauger in the heavy current below dams on large rivers.

I agree on the heavy weight for Sauger below the dams. 1oz is not uncommon. 1.5 oz would be great! Smallest body possible for the weight though.

I understand your point, Andy, but I would also like the exact opposite (biggest body and lightest weight) for spring fishing shallow flats.

Please make the larger Blade Bait mold and larger blades like you had once before, You should still have to have the prints and die's. I'm tired of scratch building them. The Time is Now!! This bait is more popular now then ever Before.

I would love to see the bigger molds also. I have asked for them in the past. The heavy river currents are too much for the smaller sizes, alot of the times. Maybe 1 oz, 1 1/4 , and 1 1/2 oz, for sure.

I would like them to do a bigger mold as well, but there are some factors that would have to be considered.  First I by no means am the end-all of blade bait design.  That said I have been hand cutting and hand pouring blade baits for 30+ years in 1/4 to 1/2 inch increments up to blade baits that look as big as a license plate and 3 ounces.  Within all these dozens of lengths and then weights (also varied) I have experimented with countless combinations over the years.

I can tell you that the "Sonar/Silver Buddy" shape that works great for the current 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 sizes,  starts to fail in larger sizes.  It takes way too much effort to get that vibration out of that shape.  I've blown that shape up and there isn't enough surface area.

So once I started getting into bigger blades, a shape and configuration similar to the Zip Lure or Big Dude is much better.  In that design I have made huge sizes and weights up to about 3 ounces and they wobble perfectly and easily.  In fact a couple guys that I make these monster blades for don't even use Fuzzy Duzzits anymore.  Fuzzys need more force and more distance to start to wobble.  More tiring....

So, my suggestion is that if Do-It decides to do a bigger blade in heavier sizes, I would have to say for hydrodynamic reasons, the shape of the blade would have to be redesigned.  I have prototypes of that original "Large Zonar" mold and the 1 oz. is ok but 1.5 and 2.0 oz. start to lose action without a lot of force and/or speed.  Conversely, not enough weight and you get a wildly out of balance lure.

There is a fine line between surface area and weight that will finally kill the action if it gets too heavy.  At that point the blade has to get bigger...and on and on... believe me, I have played the game up to about 8 or 9 inch blades and everything in between.  Oh and material thickness has to increase too....

Like my fishin buddies say, "don't get him started on blade baits (or Steely Dan)"....

Sorry for the manifesto, I'm a blade nerd.  LOL

I'm a blade nerd.

And that's a good thing. Its nice to have someone with some serious study of these baits. I know I appreciate what you contribute regarding them.

I have fished the 1 ounce vertically for Lake Trout in deep water [175 feet] and unless braid is used, a guy will get a work-out just getting the stretch out of the line let alone getting the baits to work well.
