Seeing spots
« on: 09/08/15 15:08 UTC »
Hi, New guy here.  Back in the old days Mister Twister used to make soft plastics with contrasting dots "painted" on them.  Any ideas how I could duplicate these dots?  Thanks

I'm a Fan of Full Metal Jacket and R. Lee Ermey.

My guess would be Soft Plastic Paint, dotted on maybe with a small dowel/rod.

Welcome aboard Tooboocoo!

I use a small crochet hook, the butt end of the handle. Its aluminum and holds the heat better making it easier to keep the plastic its dipped into viable for a milli-second longer while I dot the section of the mold with the color of plastic the dots are to be on the finished bait. I have a couple of said hooks each of a different diameter. The larger of the two likes to get warm in repeated uses so I have a small area wrapped with masking tape to create a "handle".

I tried the wood dowel trick but the metal hooks work better simply because the hot plastic stays workable longer. The butt end of a drill bit would work equally wee as would a nail of the size you want. An aluminum knitting needle would work great and even new they are pretty affordable, as are the crochet hooks.

Here - https://www.ispikeit.com/Store/p-564-sb-coat-black-dotting-3022.aspx

if you poke around you will see a few other colours.

This - https://www.ispikeit.com/Store/p-621-paasche-flow-pencil.aspx  Looks like it would work good for the dots

This paint uses MEK as the solvent, you do need to wear a respirator while using it.

Just to follow up....I received a couple of cans of SB Coat Dotting paint from Spike It.  It is everything I hoped for.  I tested it last night on a couple of the plastics I want to dot, and this morning you can't scrape it off if you tried.  Thanks guys for all the help! ;D
