Starting out
« on: 11/10/15 20:01 UTC »
I've been looking at making my own baits for quite a while and have decided to go ahead and take the plunge.  I'm going to get the essential series starter kit, but I've got a couple questions.  I noticed that there is softener and heat stabilizer, do I need either one of those?  Also can I use any glitter or do I need a specific kind like what comes with the kit?  Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to the Do-It forums.

I think you'll find a lot of help here but to get you going, the Essential plastic is about as good as it can get. If you plan to make small, crappie sized baits perhaps the softener would help but most molds will take the Essential plastic as it comes to you. The stabilizer is something I'd suggest getting. It helps prevent the plastic from burning, or changing color on you if it gets too hot. Until you get settled with the learning curve involved with the cooking of the plastic, especially with light colors, the stabilizer will give you a little cushion and can help save a batch of plastic that might otherwise turn on you.

One item you will want to get in addition to the basic kit is the thermometer that is sold for the plastic cooking here at Do-It. Temperature is gospel when you start out and the thermometer sold here is the right tool for the process.

Glitter stick with what the bait makers sell. It won't curly or bleed as easy as some of the craft store stuff. Some of the craft store stuff will work.
Make sure you plastic hits 350 degs the first time you cook before you pour.  Other then that practice practice practice.
And welcome to the madness
