Vent Hood
« on: 01/04/11 08:46 UTC »
I've been reading on the other post about ventilation.  I have noticed the incredibly nice vent hood Jason has, so here's the question - Will a vent hood for a kitchen stove be sufficient?  I'm talking this is just a hobby of a few hours per week, not selling baits or going overboard.  If not, what criteria do you suggest?

I have an 11' by 24' building I'm planning on converting to my fishing/hobby cave.  There is a door and two small windows.

Thanks,

Brad

Should be plenty Brad. I am furnishing my new 12 x 24 workshop and I was planning to just use a similar vent hood. As lond as you work under or near the hood, I think you will be fine.

Home Depot has decent stainless ones for around $120. I am watching garage sales also as sometimes you can catch a decent one from a kitchen remodel.

A friend of mine just replaced his in his kitchen, it is in good shape and working order.  All it will cost is a few baits!  Hoping it will be sufficient.

If you enclose it and put a clear shower curtain on the front you won't need a big fan because the area you are trying to turn the air over in is smaller.

It's basically 4' X 2' X 3' with a 18" clear shower curtain in the front taped off to make an enclosure. So that is 24 cubic feet. My fan is 350 CFM and it turns that air over 14 times a minute. That means the there is new air in the whole enclosure once every 4.5ish seconds. I can see the shower curtain suck in when I turn the fan on and fumes get sucked in from just outside it also.

I'll take pics of mine tonight when I get home.

Well, I was looking for a window fan.

But my old Ready Heater took a dump.

So I cut it up, put a switch on it and a remote (from Christmas Lights) put in on the counter for an exaust fan, right up to the window.

Before that I bought a Home Depot stove vent fan put it in cardboard and then in the window (that was about $20.00).

Don't forget you also need an open window somewhere else to let fresh air in as you get rid of the bad air.

$120.00 is too much for me.

Hope this helps.

Check and see if you have a Habitat For Humanity resell store near you. You can probably find a used one there cheap!
