Beginner Question About Injection
« on: 06/12/16 21:11 UTC »
I am a beginner that has a 4oz injector from Caney Creek, utilize microwave/Pyrex cups, and panfish molds.  I extract the 350 degree plastic for the initial heating process from the Pyrex cup into the injector and expel a little before injecting into the molds.  However, after injecting two small molds the plastic congeals in the nozzle and on the plunger located in the tube.  Is it common for the plastic to cool in the injector that quick?  I watched a few videos, and it seems they inject a few molds and are able to extract more plastic from the Pyrex cup without the aforementioned.  Thanks.

I would say this is fairly normal. Unless you heat your injector there's no way your gonna suck up more plastic without emptying it. I shoot the same way you do and even after the injector gets warm. I can maybe shoot 1 small mold 3 times before the plastic cools too much and needs reheated.

I bought an extra nozzle just for that. I inject the molds and as they cool I empty the injector and replace the nozzle. Remove the baits from the molds and inject them again. By that time the plastic in the cup is going to need remelted. So I get all the spurs and remove the plastic out of the nozzles and remelt to start over. If your working with 8 oz of plastic sometimes you can do three rounds. Just how I do it.

These guys are right on. The only thing I might add is when I reheat my plastic I add a few drops of "heat stabilizer" to the plastic. The stabilizer helps keep the plastic from scorching and keeps the colors from changing through repeated heatings. (Mix a few drops every time you reheat the plastic)

350 degrees is the target during the initial heating process.  What should the temperature be for reheating?

When reheating I only heat back up to what I need wich usually is only about 320° especially if I have glitter in it.

This is all good advice, guys.  I've been pouring for a lot of years and it never occurred to me to change out the nozzle when it gets supper hot.  Thanks, Lemar.  One thing that I usually do when making that first injection with hot plastic is to take off the plastic around the nozzle and pull out the already cooled plastic from the nozzle.  It only takes a few seconds and allows you to start injecting with a clean, unobstructed injector.
Until next time.
