Help with lure painting

My fishing partner lost his favorite lure, purchased a spare but wrong color, so I bought some Krylon gloss black. Degreased the lure, scuff sanded with 600w/d, painted lure out side in 90 weather, light coats with 10 min between coats until covered, after 20 min one final coat. Let dry for a few days before handling it.  I need to apply eye's and a distinctive mark.

Lure seems 98.5% dry, doesn't leave any marks while in the tackle box but just seems to be not quite dry. Anyone have any thoughts? Lure in a Bill Norman plastic crankbait.

Do your finish work and apply 30 minute epoxy the paint you used will never hold up in a tackle box or in use.

Sure there are many out there but if you are only doing a few lures then pick up devcon 2 ton if you plan on allot then Bob Smith epoxy sold mostly to hobbyists in larger quantities.

Make sure, if you get the Devcon, it's not the 30 minute stuff. It yellows badly over time.

Wow I've used 30 minute for a few years and none of mine have yellowed? I do know that I heard that for the 5 minute but your the first i've heard to mention the 30 minute. Well I switched to bob smith and no problems with it.

I'm sorry G2L, I meant the 5 minute fast cure stuff. Thanks for correcting me. I used it once because I couldn't find the 30 minute and it makes for some ugly baits. Takes a few months to start yellowing and then goes quickly. Like you, I've switched but to a MCU. I like the working time better and it goes on easier and thinner.

Question, how is the Devcon applied, brush, spray gun? Some one in one of the forums mentioned that the Krylon paint I used(gloss black) would not hold up and he was correct, I went to paint this particular lure with its traditional yellow dots and the paint ate at the Krylon, so I will probably sand it off and start from scratch.

So, if you can , can you give me the process and the correct materials to use , to paint this lure gloss black . Thanks in advance, MJEFF

Most guys painting cranks are using an airbrush and createx paint. Mo does a fantastic job and maybe he'll chime in. You need to spray a base color, sorta like a primer and then lay down your top colors. After the lure is painted to your satisfaction, that's when the epoxy goes on. If you use Devon 2 Ton (D2T) you just mix it 50/50 as the instructions say then brush it on. A lot of guys will place it in their lure turners then. This helps the self leveling properties of the 2 part D2T epoxy. D2T has a learning curve to it and you might want to research it's use some. It's thinned by some with denatured alcohol and it will get bubbles too. Whole threads are devoted to how to use it. Of course, there are other products you can topcoat with too. Good luck with this tacklecrafting hobby and once you get a handle on some of it, it can provide a lifetime of enjoyment.

Use cs sealer for a coat. Buy black airbrush paint and a airbrush and have fun
