Red color change???....
« on: 12/22/11 14:52 UTC »
Jason,
I just went out to the shed this morning to get it heated up for this afternoon.  Planning on pouring some....anyway, I had used some red colorant I purchased from you the last time I poured.  It shot some pretty red baits and I had cut all the tails off before leaving for the day so that the next time I poured I would have them ready to shoot green chart tails via some special shoot from the tail molds (all molds another makers....sorry).

Well, all the baits, including a few I had already shot the tails on are now orange????......more of a reddish orange.

I looked in my presto pot....also used it the first time with this pouring session, and the plastic I had left to cool in there had also changed but there were still some pieces I had thrown in while cleaning my injectors that stayed the nice red I wanted.....everything else had turned reddish orange.

what did I do wrong?  I've not had this happen with the lurecraft color I've always used but it is an old bottle and I wanted to try yours to support you.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
God Bless!

I might add that this is a presto I bought at wally world and the calhoun's plastic wouldn't even get up past 320-340 degrees and smoked like a freight train.....could I have been scorching the plastic and that caused the color change?  I've had it up to 350+ before and never had that happen.....

I also added about 6 drops of heat stabilizer to the plastic which problem attributes to the extra smoke....

Thoughts, suggestions, criticisms????;D

Thanks!
God Bless!

ok, I might have it figured out.  I ran a small batch in the micro.....4 0z and 18 drops like I have always done before........yep.....re ddish orange.  :-[

I think I need to think of adding colors by the spoon instead of the drop.  It may be that I just didn't add enough?  I needed to shoot the bodies I had poured with green chart tails.  I added a teaspoon (old one I've used for several years) of your green chart color and it was spot on for what I was wanting.

I'm thinking that if I add more of your red I will get the color red I'm looking for instead of reddish orange.....at least I hope.  it will be at least this weekend before I get a chance to try it again.

Later!
God Bless!

Our Yorker caps have a small hole in them. I bet it just needs more.

Jason,
Yeah, I'm starting to think more in terms of spoons instead of drops with all my colors from all the different manufactors out there.

Seems like it takes more with injecting baits than with handpours.....don't know why?

Hopefully I'll get a chance Christmas to try again.

Merry Christmas!
God Bless!

I shot some blood red and opaque fluorescent orange ice plastics today. The red I needed to mix a couple colors from different sources to make it the color I wanted. I did a 4 ounce batch and didn't really have to load up on either colorant to get the tone of red I needed.

The orange....now that's a different story. It too ended up being a blend of colorants since I couldn't get the fluorescent from any one source to cooperate. I started with Caney Orange transparent nb at 30 drops thinking it might be enough tocreate the opaque. Nada. I added some orange hi-lites....about 1/8 tsp. Talk about electric, but not solid enough. I ended up having to add 50 drops of another heavier bodied orange to get this where I wanted it. It was mix, re-heat, shoot, check, mix.....but I got it down. The problem was with the small body diameter and extremely lithe tail section of this plastic, it would pale out to almost a pink without the second colorant.

The red is one super hot color in the northern portion of Minnesota. I have no idea why, but the guys from the Twin Cities north sure seem to smoke sunfish and gills on the color, but it has to be a really blood red. As mentioned I used two different brands of colorant and only 15 drops of each. One was fire engine red and the other deeper red with some black tones to it. The red turned out to be a snap. But now that this fading issue will have me keepeing an eye on the red stuff. I was using Caney plastic in both cases today.

I have lots of reds from varying manufacturers and have noticed one thing, the non-bleed colors are "lighter" for sure. Blue is the same way. NB blue is a sky blue where M-F blue is that dark navy blue color.

The "bleed" colors are more true in giving the color you want but, of course, they bleed.

With M-F red, I can use 15 drops of red in 4oz plastic and get a decent red color. Bright red from LC gives me more of a pink-red regardless of the drops. The non-bleed I use more for situations when I want a nice transparent red color.
