My First Castings
« on: 03/14/17 17:38 UTC »
Well I finally got around to pouring my own lead. I started with jigs that I use (and lose) the most, darter heads and tube and tail jigs. The whole process was pretty darn easy, I had a couple dozen jigs poured up in no time. Thanks to everyone that got me pointed in the right direction.
Here are a couple pics, nothing fancy and I need a bit more practice powder painting but its a start.

Good job D ! Those bait holder barbs can be a pain to get to fill out sometimes.

Looking good DF. I was a little nervous on my first try, but it was much easier than I anticipated. Safety is a must though. I still want to try powder painting. Yours look really nice.

Thanks W, I have the 1/4 and 3/8 mold, model DTR-5-1438. Really like the 1/4 paired with a 3.5 or 4'' grub

DF that the same mold I have you'll get a lot of use out of that one. I use that one with 5" wuzt  it ,4.5"  swim shad , 3.5 & 4" grubs , flippin zip, and also tie buck tail and marabo jig that are killer for walleye's.

Good job, DF.  I especially like the green darter head.  Are you using a fluid bed yet for powder coating?  Check out TJ's for clamps and, oh yeah, you might want to start buying hooks in bulk...100's / 1,000's.  A bigger toaster oven would be nice and a few smaller files are always handy.  Like plastics, pouring lead can turn into an addiction.  The only difference is that if you don't treat the lead stuff right they'll come back and stick ya so get some small Band-Aids for the bleeders.  Oh yeah, you'll have to keep the Corvette outside.  You'll soon need the space for all your lead molds.  Oh yeah, a sharp ice pick is good to have for plugged eyes.  (Don't make the same mistake Tom made...I meant the "hook" eyes...).

Congrats on your first pour.
Until next time.

Denny

BKJ the hooks are VMC 9147, I plan on trying a few different hooks out.
No fluid bed yet Denny, I can see this being just as addictive as plastics for sure.
