Lead Ice spoons
« on: 11/15/20 02:58 UTC »
Ice size spoons1/4 and down to 1/32. I know that some issue come with being able to get the tooling to make things. Plus being able to make wire inserts may be hard to do.

I made my own using some hard setting clay to form with the small willow blades. When the clay was dry and hard I just used a high temp soldering iron and 40/60 solder to solder the hooks in place. When each lure was soldered it went into a bath of lacquer thinner to wash off the flux. I used CS Vinyl Lure Finish, thinned, to prime and painted the jigs by dipping. I airbrushed a few too any that works really good on the shining fresh lead and plated willows.

When I was making the forms in clay I pushed the bare blade slightly deeper so I ended up with hook and hook eye slots and indents to hold the hooks upright without needing to hold them with a pliers.

Cooler. West wind bucking gusts up to around 35 mph so far. Appears dry but I haven't been out.

That mold would be huge. I've tried/bought the molds they have, but most are to large or heavy for being good ice fishing spoons for panfish. The smallest casting spoon lure works ok...and makes a decent spoon when you put a dropper chain on it for perch.

It be really nice if they made a spoon that was more slender. Something thin kinda like the doodle bug/frostee spoons or just something even slender and straight to make pilke/jigger minnow and droppers for panfish.

Didn’t say that it had to be in one mold it was just the sizes I’d like to see and yes I know there are spoons that are a 1/4. Just steering the pot to see if it peeks a interest in the people that design things at DO-IT.

Since these lures would be small....It be really cool to see a combo mold. 2-3 sizes of mooska style jigs....2-3 size small spoons.

But it would be nice to see.

Since they have hooks in them......someone must make them. Wire forms......can't take much plenty of pilkie spoons out on the market.

Hooks in the tungsten jigs my be made for the people that make the jigs only.
The was a guy by me that made jig with the eye turned but he bent the eye by hand for every jig he made.
I have looked high and low for years to find hooks with the eye’s turned in the small sizes and haven’t found any to date. And same goes for the wire in the spoons.

Shelts shipping times have actually gotten much better in spite of the virus. The jigs shown in the link Walleye offered are really nice quality jigs. I ordered a couple sizes to paint for a friend and was really impressed with hot clean they are. I'm going to order again to do some for myself for dock piling fishing.

The parties who make the Mooska and diamond jig type of jigs have the hooks made specifically for their own use and the hooks are not available beyond that. And its the special bend and flat eye that makes these jigs' actions what they are. I think over-coming the mold availability lies in hook availability. I think if Eagle Claw and perhaps Mustad and a couple other hook makers were pressed to design and make hooks for these jig types they'd get it done, then you'd see the mold come along.

I like the 3 and 4 mm but for the crappies on the docks I am going to order just the 5's.

For crappies I guess its no secret that I'm fixed on gold/purple or purple/chartreuse which is a great  bent to the gold/purple. I'm going to gold foil the bottom 1/2 of the heads then blow my purple on the backs. I'll add a spot of super glue to the very front and dip it in ultra green glow pigment and hang to dry. Once dry I put another spot of super glue to the glow  and dry again, then they get dipped in c/s sealer. Years ago I had a bait shop order the gold Diamond Jigs in bulk for me and I'd modify them to this pattern and sold literally hundreds of them. This was the absolute best crappie ice jig around. I had a great run on these over three or four years then the bulk availability dried up. I just about stroked but I did have a long run on them and made some serious $$$$ over those few years. I'm thinking these heads from Shelts could bring back what I had but they'd have to be gold foiled because there isn't a gold pain anywhere that marvels gold plating, but the foil does..
