Yesterday's catch.
« on: 03/31/22 14:47 UTC »
So yesterday I decided to hit the lake for some Crappie and well my day started out ruff I ended up falling down a stupid bank but i did end up catching one good size Crappie that was a eating size but not a pig by any means.   So   anyhow I ended up hooking into a monster Bass on my  4lb test line on my ultra light  Crappie combo using a  tiny epic 2"  curly tail grub which is 2 " stretched fully out.   I made the grub up in MF transparent chartreuse with .15 flake well I had a fight like no other on my hands and thank God I had my drag set  just perfectly.  I ended up landing the monster fish and it weighed in 7 lbs 8 oz.  I  believe it swallowed the tiny grub  is what happened  it jumped 3 times out of the water on the fight but here is some pictures  I  brought it home  and it's  ready for my taxidermist I  will have pictures when ever I get it back.  I was going to get measurements of it and get a reproduction but my brother kept on me to do a skin mount instead.

A replica would have been a better choice. Killing a bass of that size from Ohio is a rare bass and you have nothing to gain by it. Just my opinion and nothing personal meant by this. Nice catch.

I agree  I'd rather did a replica these days that's how most people go but having the actual skin is nice to definitely hated killing it trust me but fortunately this is a great Bass lake here that yields some big boys  but I just didn't feal like hearing about it forever from him honestly.

Dandy fish Shaun!... I can just imagine the battle you had... how long was the fight?

Although I would ideally consider/choose a replica for myself (over a skin mount), after having looked into the prices for some of my fish in the past (post picture-release), I decided pictures were good enough.... around here replicas are about 3x the price of skin mounts, so I don't fault anyone for going the cheaper route.

WOW....on an ultralight too. Way to go. Better move over though cause efishnc will be moving in on your honey hole to catch fish of that size.

Thank you.  Yeah I always like pictures as well and always love taxidermy fish and stuff.
I fought it probably 5 good minutes straight before it came in to the bank and I thought it got me tangled in some roots but  it was getting dark so I hurried and called a friend about 10 minutes away to bring a flashlight and net but  I guess it was just laying on the bottom and I kept pulling on it and he put flashlight on the area and it took off and came in close to where could get it netted buy some guy came by in a truck and was like oh my goodness oh my goodness you've got a monster as it jumped out of the water and was like is that a Crappie rod and reel I'm like yes and  4lb line on a tiny grub and he started laughing and like unbelievable I hope you can find a way to get it in.   I am going to do the mount jumping out of water I believe with that little tiny grub in its mouth with the 4lb line and have it with a glass case around it if I can have it done this way.    Yeah the  skin mounts here is cheaper also.

Thank you and yepp on a micro lite combo 4 lb line on a tiny grub. I think it swallowed the grub is why it kept jumping and probably would have ended up dieng if I did put it back I'm thinking but my brother always said the bigger the bait the bigger the fish but I disagree and always have and I asked him I thought the bigger the bait the bigger the fish? Lol
Efishnc would be welcome here and you come to bring your crappie stuff lots of nice ones in this lake

By the way Shaun I'm in the camp of Lamar and efishnc on the repro, but I'm not judging you by keeping the fish. Everyone is entitled to choose how they want a mount done. I have a 7 pound walleye that I tried to revive during a very warm summer trip and it just wouldn't come back so it went to the taxidermist. It made a beautiful skin mount in spite of the fact I have no inclination to have any other fish mounts done.

Right I agree with Lamar and efishnc  and you truly do I did feal bad about taking it been trying to release pretty much everything I've got a reproduction 41 lb catfish being done now and  a buddy that passed away last year was with me when I caught it said you are releasing it we made the agreement so away it went swimming but I got lots of pictures  length and girth and having a reproduction done on it to go with my other  flathead mount but should be done at the middle of this year hopefully plus a catfish really can't be mounted very easily and a reproduction last a lifetime.  I just love mounts but I understand and honestly I would have released it but I guess I see both sides also because actually getting it's skin.  Anyways I'll have a picture of the big flatly once I get it back but Crappie and Catfish is my #1 fish but congratulations on that big walleye mount do you have a picture by chance?

That thing is a beast!  Does OH offer a citation certificate for a certain size and above like WV does. If so that would look awful nice hanging next to the mount IMHO.
