Going fishing!!!
« on: 02/17/11 08:21 UTC »
I am working part time today and tomorrow as I'm going fishing.  It is finally starting to warm up and I think we've got a chance at some of these rascals.  Wish me luck.  I will post a summary and hopefully some pics.

Tight lines!

Well, the fishing was tough... I think we were just a little ahead of the fish, but only by a few days.  If it stays warm we should be in a spawn pattern within a week or two tops.  We managed to boat a handful of nice fish, I would say we did better than most considering we were targeting large fish.  We talked to several people that either had no fish, or just a handful of males.  We mainly fished the Birch Bug on a jig, and fished all the Carrots.  They all produced.  The 6" Skinny Carrot won big fish with the below female weighing in at close to 8.25lbs.

Overall it was a really nice couple days.  The weather was awesome, a little windy, but it is so nice to have the warm weather back.

Tight lines!

That's the fish of a lifetime here in the Buckeye state. Congratulations. We've still got ice for another week or two.

Nice fish Jason. How did you rig your carrot to get that big bite?

That's the fish of a lifetime here in the Buckeye state. Congratulations. We've still got ice for another week or two.

Just remember, it's all relative.  I grew up in Kansas and have a 6.8lb Bass mounted right next to my 13 and am just as proud of it.  You have to consider the body of water you are fishing.  An 8 is a super nice fish down here, but it would be like catching a 6 - 6.5 maybe smaller up north.

The most important thing is you are outdoors doing something you love.  For me the fish are just a bonus (unless I miss a good bite - then everything changes  :-\ ).

Nice fish Jason. How did you rig your carrot to get that big bite?

Fork is super pressured, so a slow finesse presentation normally works best on bigger fish.  I've been wacky rigging them with a 1/16oz weighed wacky hook.  Try and hook then about 1/3 from the head, and diagonal, they will fall forward and wobble at the same time.

This is a slow way to fish, but if you are patient you will catch good quality fish.

As the water warms and the fish are more active I will probably go to a 1/8 ounce swim bait hook and Texas rig it.

I will try and post a video of the Carrots, new worms and rigging options this week.

Thanks,

Jason
